On Wednesday, Governor Ned Lamont and state Agriculture Commissioner Bryan Hurlburt visited Rockville High School to discuss how Farm to School practices and state investments through grant programs are connecting students with how their food is grown, healthy eating and improved learning. Vernon is well versed in Farm to School programming, having worked with farmers across the state since 2020 to bring fresh, Connecticut grown produce to our students. The Food & Nutrition Services Department spends roughly $20,000 a year on Connecticut grown foods, and while this is only a small portion of the total food expenditures, the program grows annually. Funding through the CT Fresh Ed: Buy Local Program has allowed Vernon to offer more whole, fresh foods to students while also providing learning opportunities through the cafeteria.

Zet Rodriguez, Rockville High School cafeteria manager, has helped changed the culture of school meals in Vernon. Our kindergarteners are learning all about community helpers! 👮♀️👩🚒👨⚕️ Today, they welcomed Town Mayor Dan Champagne, who read to the students and shared what a mayor does to help our community. We’re grateful for this special visit and the opportunity for our students to learn about local government and the people who serve our town!
Our Kindergarteners have had an unforgettable time learning about community helpers this past month! Huge thanks to Officers Dom, Officer Zawadski & his K-9 Franco and Firefighter Hammick from the Vernon Fire Department for visiting Lake Street School.
