On Wednesday, Governor Ned Lamont and state Agriculture Commissioner Bryan Hurlburt visited Rockville High School to discuss how Farm to School practices and state investments through grant programs are connecting students with how their food is grown, healthy eating and improved learning. Vernon is well versed in Farm to School programming, having worked with farmers across the state since 2020 to bring fresh, Connecticut grown produce to our students. The Food & Nutrition Services Department spends roughly $20,000 a year on Connecticut grown foods, and while this is only a small portion of the total food expenditures, the program grows annually. Funding through the CT Fresh Ed: Buy Local Program has allowed Vernon to offer more whole, fresh foods to students while also providing learning opportunities through the cafeteria.

None of this work would be possible without the wonderful cafeteria teams in the schools across Vernon. Zet Rodriguez, Rockville High School cafeteria manager, has helped changed the culture of school meals in Vernon. Under Zet’s leadership, the students are given a voice, try new things and are excited to show up in the cafeteria each day. We’re grateful for this special visit and the opportunity for our students to learn about local government and the people who serve our town!
