Nixon Perez, a fifth grader at Vernon’s Lake Street School, has a pretty good sense of what he would like to do for a career. He is fascinated with weather and would like to become a meteorologist.
“I love weather,” he said.
The affable 11-year-old is off to a strong start. When Lake Street Principal Tracy Duenzl learned about Nixon’s fascination with weather, she put him to work delivering forecasts on the school’s morning announcements.
Nixon knows his audience. Every forecast he prepares contains that important detail his fellow students want to know about: will recess be outside?
The “Twister” movies are what got Nixon interested in weather and prompted him to begin studying weather.
If meteorology doesn’t work out, Nixon’s backup plan is to play shortstop for the New York Yankees.
