National NHD Contest

Jacob Brown, RHS 9th grader, and Madison Gordon, VCMS 8th grader, compete at the National History Day contest the week of June 10. The theme of this year's contest is Rights and Responsibilities. Madison completed research to create an exhibit about Native American Boarding Schools, specifically about how the US Government denied cultural rights while attempting to fulfill its mission of educating indigenous children. Jacob's exhibit focuses on the legislation stemming from Sheff v. O'Neill and how it has affected equity in Connecticut's school system. Both students competed and advanced at the regional and State contests to make it to the National contest. In addition, Jacob's project will represent Connecticut and be displayed at the Smithsonian Museum of American History.
