Science
In middle school science, the students study Earth Science, Life Science, and Physical Science. In 6th-grade science, the focus is on an introduction to all three areas of study. To start the year, students learn the difference between science and engineering and the importance of each. Other units that are covered are Ecosystem Dynamics (Life Science), Earth Surface Processes (Earth Science), Environmental Science (Earth Science), and Heat Transfer (Physical Science). In 7th grade, students focus on topics in Life Science and Physical Science, including Atomic Structure (Physical Science), Cell Biology (Life Science), Genetics and Life (Life Science), and The Human Body (Life Science). Units incorporate many hands-on experiences and the use of scientific instruments, such as microscopes. In 8th grade, science focuses primarily on Physical Science with a little Earth Science. Students will hone in on their investigative skills and they study Chemistry (Physical Science), Force and Motion (Physical Science), Energy (Physical Science), Waves (Physical Science), and Space (Earth Science). Students will take part in more lab-based activities to be ready for high school. Throughout Middle School, students will learn critical thinking, questioning, developing and using models, arguing from evidence, planning and carrying out scientific investigations, and the ability to justify their thinking with evidence.
