Each year at Skinner Road School, Mr. Kerachsky (Mr. K) chooses a theme for Skinner Road staff to embrace throughout the school year. This year’s theme is Cornerstone of the Rock. This theme was inspired by The Cornerstone Foundation located in Rockville, CT who strives to support and strengthen our community. To continue to celebrate our theme, Student Council partnered with The Cornerstone Foundation.
Through our partnership, Student Council learned that Cornerstone has a clothing bank where people have access to clothes and other household items that they may need. Cornerstone receives many donations but one thing that they always need is towels. Student Council decided to do a towel drive to support the clothing bank. Together, our SRS community donated over 375 new towels to The Cornerstone Foundation. We have 235 face cloths, 42 hand towels, and 102 body towels. In addition, students were able to purchase raffle tickets to enter for a chance to pie Mr. D. and Mr. K. in the face. With all of the raffle ticket purchases we received, we raised $120. Student Council will be matching the $120 for a total of $240 also to be donated to Cornerstone. The lucky winners who got to pie Mr. D. and Mr. K. in the face were first grader Luis, seconder grader Mia, and fifth graders Olivia and Bentley.
Aligning with Vernon Public Schools Vision of the Graduate, Responsible Citizen, students were able to recognize the needs of others in their community, while making a positive contribution to the town of Vernon. These are the experiences that make school memorable. Not only are they making the community a better place, but the students are able to feel good about themselves and have a positive impact far reaching the walls of Skinner Road School.
