Fifth grade is full of exciting adventures and wonderful opportunities that the students will endure throughout the year. However, there will also be greater responsibilities and challenges. In 5th grade we are all about preparation for the middle school, both academically and socially.
Speaking of academics…..in reading, the students will have the opportunity to learn through a reader’s workshop model. Students will practice applying skills during independent and small group reading time. All students are encouraged to choose high interest novels at their own reading levels.
We strongly encourage our mathematicians to know their facts and practice them frequently.
In writing, students will be creating a variety of pieces throughout the year. These will include: expository, persuasive, articles, poetry, letters, etc. By the end of the year, we should have our editing skills mastered.
Topics of study in science include: Sun and Moon, Light and Sound, and Senses. All fifth graders will also be required to participate in the annual science fair. In the spring we will also be discussing different health topics.
In social studies, our main focus is the Revolutionary War and Westward Movement. In the spring the students will research and write a report on a country and then show off their hard work at the Country Expo.
