LEARNING STRATEGIES - S1 & S2                                                                 (9158A & 9158B)

Special Education students receive small group specialized instruction to improve study skills, organization, work completion, and identified goals and objectives.  This course may be taken multiple times.  Upon successful completion of both semesters students can earn one elective credit.

PRACTICAL ENGLISH 9/10* - S1 & S2                                                             (9123A & 9123B)

Special Education students receive small group specialized instruction on a modified language arts curriculum improving reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.  This course may be taken multiple times.  Upon successful completion of both semesters students can earn one English credit.

PRACTICAL MATH 9/10* - S1 & S2                                                                  (9124A & 9124B)

Special Education students receive small group specialized instruction on a modified mathematics curriculum improving computation and problem solving skills that have real life applications.  This course may be taken multiple times.  Upon successful completion of both semesters of Practical Math 1 or Practical Math 2, students can earn one Mathematics credit.

READING STRATEGIES 1 – S1 & S2                                                                            (9109A & 9109B)

Special Education students receive specialized and intensive multisensory instruction aimed at more complex reading strategies.  This course is designed for students who have mastered the basic decoding  and fluency skills and are ready to improve their reading comprehension, spelling, and advanced decoding.  Students will learn more complex reading strategies, enhancing their ability to comprehend, retain, and apply information from various texts.  This course can be repeated to provide continued support and development.

PRE-ALGEBRA* - S1 & S2                                                                               (5201A & 5201B)

            One semester each         Credit: 0.50 each         Weight 1.00

Using a modified Pre-Algebra curriculum, this course uses small-group specialized instruction to prepare Special Education students with the foundational concepts required to be successful in Algebra I.  Upon successful completion of both semesters students can earn one Mathematics credit.

ALTERNATE SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM (ASEP)

ASEP is a special education program for students who require a more intensive, highly structured setting with a low student-to-staff ratio in order to make effective progress within the high school setting.  The program provides identified students with intensive educational, behavioral, and emotional support that stresses academic, social, emotional, and behavioral growth.

ACTIVITY BASED LEARNING PROGRAM (ABL)

An activity-based learning program is available for students whose performance is enhanced through community field trips and practical, repetitive, hands-on classroom activities. Students participating in this program may have specialized instruction in the following areas: Reading, Math, Science/Social Studies, Health, and Independent Living.

TOTAL ALTERNATIVE LEARNING CENTER (TALC)

TALC is a small, structured, self-contained environment that serves students in Grade 9 through 12.  It is housed at Rockville High School.  This is a restrictive setting for students with disabilities who exhibit significant social, emotional, and behavioral challenges which have severely impacted their academic performance.  Group and individual counseling are provided for all students in addition to hands-on learning opportunities.
