Third Grade

Welcome to the wonderfully exciting world of 3rd grade! We are becoming creative and analytical thinkers. Third grade is all about building our independence! Members of Mrs. Guilmette’s and Ms. Finlay's class are excited to be in the upper wing this year!
Our first math unit explores the introduction of multiplication and division. 3rd graders are SO excited to start learning their facts. We use lots of hands-on activities that encourage connection making and deeper understanding. Students work daily on their fact fluency and will continue to learn about place value, area and perimeter, geometry, and more! Daily practice of math facts at home would reinforce our efforts.
Third grade is a pivotal year for reading! Students make the shift from learning to read, to reading to learn. We are introducing many genres of reading and writing. For example, students will recognize the difference between fiction and nonfiction and will be able to incorporate those ideas into their writing. Students will be reading books at their differentiated levels both independently and in their class groups.
In Science... Did you know that seeds do not need sunlight or soil to grow? Ask any student in Grade 3 and they will tell you what they learned!
Social Studies will include Current Events, learning facts about Connecticut and Vernon, and research for a State Report!
