June 4, 2021

Good afternoon Rockville families,

Last night was a spectacular evening in which 69 of our 172 seniors received recognition for their academic, athletic, and/or service last night. $327,670 was distributed amongst the awards in large part to our supportive and generous community. Congratulations to those seniors and for those underclassmen, please remember to apply for scholarships in your senior year.

I will send out specific information on Monday to senior families about rehearsal and graduation.

Please take time this weekend to honor those who have fallen during their military service.

I would like to thank everyone for your efforts as we approach the home stretch on behalf of the staff at Rockville High School.  We want everyone to finish strong!

Dress code

I know I have mentioned this before but as the weather gets warmer please be aware that there is a dress code at RHS that students need to follow or they may be asked to change or possibly even be sent home for the day (which we do not want to have to do) (page 21-22 of the handbook).

Good afternoon RHS families,

We are excited to host our Senior Prom this evening and it will certainly be a well-deserved special occasion for our students.  As the school year draws to a close I want to continue to work in partnership with you to make certain that all of our students finish the year strong and go into their summer break with positive momentum.

Exams

We will only be having exams in the classes that require them for college credit, AP, etc.  Teachers may give final assessments but we will not be running an exam schedule much like we did at the mid-year point.  I will send out the schedule information once we are closer for the last week.

May 7, 2021

Good afternoon RHS families,

You have amazing children and I am so happy to have more opportunities to interact with many of them daily.  I am proud of the way they have handled themselves upon our return.  Please encourage students to finish the year strong so they can begin their next adventure next year on the right foot.

Morning Drop-off:

If you drop your student off in the morning you probably see me on the corner.  I have been trying to figure out the best way to ease the traffic jam from 7:20 until 7:30 so I will be trying a few different things to see what works.  Our doors are locked at 7:30 and the bell rings which means if students enter after 7:30 they are considered tardy and they may have to walk around the building to be let in, this is what I am trying to avoid.  This morning we had 27 students tardy in the first 10 minutes of school which is not conducive to our students succeeding in their first block classes.  I will say that from 7:00- 7:15 you can pretty much drive right through and drop students off.  The school doors open at 7:00.  Anything you can do to help get students in classes prior to 7:30 will be much appreciated in the last month of school.

End of the Year Events:

  • Undergraduate Awards - May 27, 2021 @ 7:00 pm  (in person - RHS auditorium)

  • Senior Awards - June 3 @ 7:00 pm  (in person - RHS auditorium)

  • Prom - May 21, 2021 (6:00-9:30 PM RHS)

  • Graduation - June 10, 2021 (6:00pm in the RHS Courtyard) Project Graduation will be having their after graduation trip this year and I will send the information to senior families as it comes in.

Happy Mother’s Day and have a great weekend,

Mr. Magao

April 30, 2021

Good afternoon RHS families,

 Thank you for your patience in this first week back and we are extremely happy to have our students back!  I would like to share a few important reminders;

  1. The morning bell rings at 7:30 and students who arrive after that will be considered late and have to enter the main doors to the building.  With the transition back this week we kept the student entrance doors (near the Ag building) open later but they will be locked at 7:30 beginning Monday and students will have to walk around the building to the main entrance.  This week it has become apparent that parent drop-off is the busiest from 7:18- 7:30.  Students may enter the building beginning at 7:00 each morning.

  2. Masks must be worn properly, covering the nose and mouth without exception

Undergraduate:

  • Undergraduate Awards - May 27, 2021 @ 7:00 pm  (in person - RHS auditorium)

Seniors:

  • Senior Awards - June 3 @ 7:00 pm  (in person - RHS auditorium)

  • Prom - May 21, 2021 (6:00-9:30 PM RHS) Tickets will be on sale next week during lunches, students have the details)

  • Graduation - June 10, 2021 (6:00pm in the RHS Courtyard)

Detailed information about graduation will be mailed home at the beginning of next week

 Athletics

The CIAC Scholar Athlete presentation will be aired on Fox 61 Sunday May 2nd at 6:30. Tune in to see our two scholar athletes who will be honored.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mr. Magao

April 23, 2021

Good afternoon RHS families,

We are looking forward to having many of our students attending four days a week beginning next week.  Please remind your students that masks must be worn covering both the mouth and nose.  We do not want to have to send anyone home for improperly wearing their mask but it is imperative that we keep all of our students safe.  Thank you for your help with this and all of your help this year.

Parent Square:

  • I will be sending my weekly updates exclusively through Parent Square beginning next week.  If you need assistance signing up please let us know.

Reminder:

  • Beginning next week if students are supposed to be in person and do not physically show up for class they will be marked absent even if they login virtually (this is a change from current practice)

  • If in-person students login virtually they can continue to do the work for credit but this should not be a regular occurrence

  • We are aware of special situations such as quarantining and we will contact families with details as these situations arise

Class T-Shirts and Sweatshirts

Orders and payments for the class T-shirt & hoodie sale are due on Wednesday, April 28 to Mr. Courtois (Room 164) or Mrs. Courtois (School Counseling Office).  Order forms were included with the report card mailing earlier in April.  Extra order forms are available in the School Counseling Office.

Have a fantastic weekend,

Mr. Magao

  • We will be having a senior prom at RHS because we could not get the other venue we wanted with the exception of a few Monday nights.  It will be a fun filled night and I will send out the details when we have them.

  • We will be holding graduation at RHS this year.  Depending on what the governor allows for gathering sizes we will have a more traditional ceremony.  Once this information is available I will send out all of the details.

March 29, 2021

Good afternoon,

We were having issues with our Wifi and we ended up not having email on Friday so I waited until today to send this message out.  This is a perfect segway to encourage everyone to download the Parent Square App.  I was able to send a message about the internet and email issues using the Parent Square App and I plan to send my weekly updates the same way in the near future.

Attire:

With the warmer weather coming soon, please encourage your students to dress appropriately for school.  We do not want to send anyone home for dress code violations but we will address them as needed- please see RHS Handbook - Page 21.  Our physical education classes will also be going outside for classes so students will need to be prepared.

Thursday Schedule:

All students will be virtual on this coming Thursday as we have our second planned vaccination clinic for staff on this day.

Have a great week,

Mr. Magao

March 12, 2021

Here are some important updates from the Vernon Public Schools (VPS):

· The Vernon Pubic Schools is at a critical juncture in the COVID-19 Health Pandemic.  School Personnel, who want the vaccine, has been giving their first dose, however to be fully vaccinated individuals need to wait 2 weeks after their 2nd dose.  Please remember that none of our students are vaccinated at this time and there is no timeline from the DPH.  This issue, along with the several variants detected in Connecticut, reminds us that we must remain vigilant with our mitigations strategies.  It is the suite of Mitigations Strategies (see below) that have allowed us to be in school.  We are asking families to adhere to these strategies both in school and at home!

·  Our Plan is to fully vaccinate all school personnel (teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, custodians, secretaries, librarians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, and everyone working in schools), by April 15, 2021, which is two weeks after the second dose.  There may be changes to the school schedules on Monday, April 26, 2021.  Thank you for your patience and understanding.

· The Center for Disease Control (CDC) released Interim Public Health Recommendations for Fully Vaccinated People.  You can access them here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated-guidance.html

·The Vernon Food & Nutrition Services Department will continue to provide free meal bags every Wednesday at Rockville High School and Vernon Center Middle School from 12:00PM – 3:00PM. Meals are free for all children 18 and under (including toddlers). Child does not need to be present at pick up. Please wear a mask when picking up meals.

·Today is the 120th Day of School in Vernon.  Please note there will be No School for Students on Friday, March 12th and Monday, March 15th for Teacher Professional Development.  There will be a Remote (Virtual) Learning School Day on Thursday, April 1, 2021 for all Vernon schools and students.  No in-person classes on April 1st.

 Mitigation Strategies in Schools

Slowing the Spread of COVID-19 through effective mitigation strategies is the key to providing a healthy and safe learning environment for all students.  The Vernon Public Schools has experienced positive results with this suite of numerous mitigation strategies over the past 6 months and we need to remain vigilant as the new strain of COVID-19 emerges in our nation.  Please note some of our on-going strategies:

·         Face Coverings at all times for Students and Staff

·         Regular hand-washing for students in bathrooms

·         Hand Sanitizers in all classrooms for student/staff use

·         Reconfigured Water Fountains to avoid germs

·         Sanitizing and Cleaning all tabletops and desks

·         Cohorting of Students & Contact Tracing

·         Air filter replacements & enhanced ventilation maintenance

·         Twice daily cleaning of high-touch areas

·         Self-monitoring for Covid-19 symptoms during quarantine

·         Social Distancing, maximizing where feasible

·         Visual Markers and Positioning in Hallways

·         No Public Entry & Limited Visitors in Buildings

·         Disinfecting Cafeteria Tables between Lunch Waves

·         Enhanced Building Cleaning every day in all classrooms

February 26, 2021

Good afternoon Rockville families,

Thank you for your support!

We would like to extend a hearty congratulations to the senior class on their Powderpuff Food Drive victory. The final score was 3,348-2,175. The junior class gave a valiant effort with several sizable paper product donations. Through your generosity, RHS will bring a donation of 1,098 items to the Hockanum Valley Community Council food pantry.

This includes 31 packs of paper towels equaling 77 rolls, and 89 packs of toilet paper equaling an astounding 558 rolls of toilet paper!!!

A cash donation will be added from staff dress down to enable HVCC to purchase milk, eggs, and fresh fruits and vegetables for their clients.

In a time of great need, RHS gave a great team effort to help feed members of our community.

February 19, 2021

Good afternoon Rockville families,

I am going to set up evening Zoom meetings for families in the near future.  We are going to offer multiple sessions in an attempt to accommodate as many families as possible.  I am waiting to iron out some details of Parent Square which is a one stop shop for communication between the school, students and families before I schedule these meetings.  We would like to have the most accurate information to share with everyone.  The goal of Parent Square is to alleviate confusion from the amount of emails you might be receiving.  We are always looking for the best possible ways to connect with our students and families.

Good afternoon Rockville families,

Hopefully you are a fan of football or snow and this will be an enjoyable weekend for you.  I would like to thank everyone again for all of the support you are providing your children when they are working through virtual learning, it is a tremendous help!

Unfortunately, we are unable to have the typical crowds at our sporting events that we would in a non-pandemic year but for everyone’s information and a link to watch basketball games live streamed, Mr. Farrell has shared the information below.

January 29, 2021

Good afternoon Rockville families,

I waited  to send out this email in the event that we would have our schedule impacted by the weather.  Hopefully everyone has a chance to enjoy the snow today.

I am not certain what tomorrow will bring but if we have an in-person delayed schedule everything will begin 2 hours later including buses and parent dropoff.  Our first block will begin at 9:30.

If we have a snow day virtual day for all students we will begin our first block at 9:30.  The difference between the two schedules is our lunch block.  If students are home we have one standard lunch block but if we are in-person we need to have multiple lunches to safely distance our students.  In the event we have an impact on our schedule for tomorrow based on the weather, I will send out the schedule to all families and students.

Photo Retakes:

Photo retakes for students in the M-Z cohort have been rescheduled for Friday, February 19th  in the auditorium.

Students should obtain a pass from Mrs. K or Mrs. Haines in the administrative offices. Virtual students may come in for photos through the main office. New students should have their photo done on this day for their student IDs.

Report Cards/Grades

Second quarter report cards were mailed to students' homes on Wednesday, January 27.  If you do not receive the report card by Monday, February 1, please email rita.courtois@vernonct.org.

The deadline for the submission of work to resolve Q2 INC grades is Thursday, February 4, 2021.

Thank you,

Mr. Magao

January 15, 2021

Good afternoon Rockville families,

We hope all is well and everyone has an opportunity to enjoy the three day weekend.  We will return to our normal Hybrid Schedule on Tuesday, January 19, 2021.

Coming Soon:

Very soon, Rockville High School will be piloting a program called Parent Square.  This is a one stop shop for communication and from the research we have done it is extremely user friendly and parents as well as students give it rave reviews.  I feel as though we have way too many ways we communicate with our families and students so we are going to use this program to streamline the process.  Once we have all of our data in order we will be sending along all necessary information to our staff and families.  Please feel free to google Parent Square for more information now.

QUARTER 2/SEMESTER 1 ENDS WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20, 2021

January 08, 2021

Good afternoon Rockville High School families,

Welcome back and it has been great to see our students this week.  I hope you had some time to enjoy your family and relax over the break and I look forward to amazing things in our future together!

We are nearing the end of quarter 2 and the first semester.  We understand that this has been a trying year for our students and many of them have struggled with virtual learning. I am proud of the perseverance our students have shown and their continued determination.  We want to ensure that every student has every opportunity to succeed so we are continuing with our after school STAR program to help students catch up and we will continue with office hours on Wednesday afternoons for teachers to meet in small groups or individually via teleconferencing with students.  We are also in the planning stages of creating a Peer Tutoring opportunity for students during Rock Blocks.  Please join us in encouraging your students to strive for success and to use any of the supports we have in place for them.

End of Semester 1: January 20th is the last day of the quarter, all work is due by January 20th.  If your student receives an incomplete for quarter 2, they must  make-up those incompletes no later than February 4th.

Athletics- Our Student Athlete Leadership Team is hosting a “College Night” presentation on Thursday January 14th at 6:00 PM. We will have former RHS alumni and college coaches on to answer questions and discuss steps high school athletes can take to get to the next level, and what life is like as a college athlete. Use this link to join us that evening.

December 18, 2020

Good morning,

Please accept my apology as I did a poor job of communicating clearly.  I would like to outline what the Rockville High School schedule looks like from now until the break.

schedule for virtual snow days

December Schedule

Thank you,

Mr. Magao

December 16, 2020

Good afternoon Rockville High School families,

We hope you can take the time to enjoy the snow and maybe even make a snowman.  Please stay safe and enjoy your Holidays.

Snow Day Virtual versus Virtual for COVID related reasons:

Our delayed opening schedule for Snow Day Virtual Learning was created because many of our students have to help shovel out their family members who continue to have to report for work as well as for staffing purposes.  If the roads are not passable and we begin at 7:30 with students, this will create issues for attendance purposes as well as answering your phone calls in a timely manner.  This is the schedule that we will use for Friday, December 18, 2020.

If the superintendent deems it necessary to move to full virtual learning on a short term basis as he has done next week for COVID related purposes we are going to use our ½ day schedule (our current Wednesday schedule) where students will have their classes in the morning and then be able to work with teachers during the afternoon office hours as needed. We will have the previously scheduled ½ day on Wednesday December 22nd without afternoon office hours.  Many students reported in their survey results that they feel they are behind with their work and we feel this is a great opportunity for students to get caught up before the new year while getting support from their teachers.

Photo Day make-up

Grades 9-11 photo day is cancelled for tomorrow and has been rescheduled to January 22nd

From the Attendance Office:

For accurate record keeping purposes, please EMAIL the Attendance Office rather than call whenever possible.

If your student is absent, dismissed or tardy please email this information to the Attendance Office at

RHS.Attendance@vernonct.org  Be sure to include your student’s name, grade AND the time for dismissal or entry into class.

****If your student feels their attendance is incorrect, please have them email their teacher to discuss this rather than the Attendance Office. The teacher will inform the Attendance Office if any correction needs to be made.

From the School Nurse:

I sent this message earlier but I made a mistake on the email and added an e to Jasmin's name so I am resending this information with the correct email address.

In accordance with the CDC schools can only accept the PCR Covid test.  Rapid tests do not meet the guidelines . The antibody test, which tests for the individual's immune system reaction to a past viral infection can not be used to determine school attendance per CDC.

Please inform the nurse (jasmin.flores@vernonct.org) if your student is getting a covid test in order to assist with contact tracing.

Happy Holidays,

Mr. Magao

December 11, 2020

Good afternoon Rockville High School families,

We are inching closer and closer to the Holiday break with the potential for inclement weather over the next week.  We will be sharing the Family Guide for Virtual Snow Days early next week.  I will have it posted on our website and shared via social media for your reference.  This document will help answer questions you might have.

Exams:

After meeting with my principals’ group, gathering data from 25 districts, and discussions with faculty and department chairs, we have decided that exams will only be given if:

  •  required for course completion (i.e. dual enrollment courses, AP, ECE, ) or

  • Your student has a semester long course with a culminating project that needs to be completed

Teachers may give an end of quarter 2 assessment but it will not be as complex as an exam.  This plan will provide more contact time between students and teachers which will hopefully lessen the stress for our students.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out.

Enjoy your weekend,

Mr. Magao

December 04, 2020

 Midterms:

Midterm progress reports for the second quarter will be distributed to in-person students on Friday, December 4 and Monday, December 7.  Reports for virtual learners will be mailed on Friday, December 4.  If you do not receive a report for your student, contact Rita Courtois in the School Counseling Office (rita.courtois@vernonct.org or 860-870-6050 ext 4065).

Attendance:

We have been attempting to streamline our attendance procedures.  Please have your students email their teachers if they feel there has been an error in how the teacher marked them.  We will then work with our attendance office to make certain every student has the correct attendance in Aspen.

STAR Program (After school help):

Students have the opportunity to work after school with staff both in person (Tuesday and Thursday) and virtually on Mondays and Wednesdays.  Students can see their counselor or classroom teacher to get recommended for this program.

Support Opportunity:

The Peer Advocates are sponsoring a “Gift Card Giveaway” to benefit RHS students in need.  We are looking for gift card donations (suggested gift card amount is $25)  to stores such as Walmart, Target, Kohl’s, TJ Maxx or Ocean State Job Lot since they carry basic need items.    Parents can drop off the gift cards or students can bring them to the main office or to Mrs. McTighe in Room 235.  The gift cards will be distributed to students by the school support staff.  Please contact Kim McTighe at (860) 896-4107 or kimberly.mctighe@vernonct.org   with any questions or to request a gift card for your child.  All donations are greatly appreciated.  Happy Holidays!

From the School Nurse:

In accordance with the CDC schools can only accept the PCR Covid test.  Rapid tests do not meet the guidelines . The antibody test, which tests for the individual's immune system reaction to a past viral infection can not be used to determine school attendance per CDC.  Please inform the nurse (jasmine.flores@vernonct.org if your student is getting a Covid test in order to assist with contact tracing.

Have a restful weekend,

Mr. Magao

November 20, 2020

Good afternoon Rockville High School families,

Thank you to those of you who filled out our district survey.  I believe in being reflective so I have been reflecting a lot lately on how we did things last spring and then how we have done thus far this year.   I need to say how impressed I am with our students and families and the dedication and determination that both have shown.  We have an amazing group of students and our families have been right there with us trying to have the greatest educational impact on them as well.   We will continue to adapt and advance for the sake of every student at Rockville High School no matter what obstacles we might face.

Thank you for being our partner!

October 2, 2020

Good afternoon Rockville families,

Schedule: We have been gathering feedback from you, the students and the staff and we are going to implement a new thought process starting the week after next. We hope this will help us reach all learners in the most effective way possible. Unfortunately, due to the unforeseen but significant increase in cost with making an adjustment to the daily drop off time, we are not going to be able to move forward with the original plan.  We have a back-up plan which will look similar but keep the same schedule and cohorts for the high school.  I will send a detailed plan to everyone Monday.

October 14th PSAT and SAT

  • We will have regular bus transportation in the morning and then on the half day schedule for when students finish

  • There will be no classes for grades 9 and 10

  • Grade 11 students will take the PSAT

  • Grade 12 students who choose to will be taking the make-up SAT school day

September 25, 2020

Good afternoon,

Athletics-

  • Games will begin on October 1st. Each spectator will be required to have a ticket. Tickets will be given to the student athletes to give to 2 members of their family. Tickets will be collected at the game. Face coverings must be worn at all times and please socially distance at the games.

  • For a full schedule please go to this link. http://ciacsports.com/site/?page_id=105

  • This fall we are running boys soccer, girls soccer, cross country, girls volleyball, cheer, unified sports, and football (practice only).

  • We are in need of student volunteers to help at athletic events. Community service hours will be provided. If your son or daughter would like to help have them see Mr. Farrell in the athletics office.

Community Service Hours

  • I am in discussions with Dr. Macary and the BOE about how we will be handling our community service requirements, more information to follow.

October 14th SAT and PSAT

  • We will be having PSAT for grade 11 and SAT Schoolday for current grade 12 students who have not already taken the SAT (make-up from the Spring).  This will impact the 9th and 10th grade students as they will not have school on that day, but will have assigned work to be completed.  This will impact 11th and 12th grade students because that is a Wednesday and they will have to physically come to Rockville High School to take the test.  Students who are entirely virtual will have to make a decision if they are going to come to RHS for these assessments.

September 19, 2020

Good afternoon,

We have been reviewing survey results from both parents and students while we try to make each day even better for students at Rockville High School.  Thank you for your valuable input.

Student/Parent Handbook

Please follow the link below to view and acknowledge the RHS Student Handbook Sign Off and Technology Compliance Agreement:

https://www.familyid.com/rockville-high-school-vcms/2020-2021-technology-compliance-agreement-and-rockville-high-school-handbook-sign-off

Free

Breakfast and lunch is currently free for all Vernon students until at least mid-December per the State of Connecticut.

Zoom

We have had a few minor issues over the past week that we have sorted out in regards to Zoom.  To enhance Zoom security, students will only be allowed into their Zoom classroom if they are displaying their first and last name. Staff members at RHS can assist if students do not know how to change their name on the screen.

Attendance

We are currently having conversations around the best practice for students who are enrolled in the hybrid model but decide to go virtual on a day in which they should be physically present.  There are pros and cons to each side of the argument but we have not come to a decisive conclusion yet.  We will be sending out guidance on this matter in the near future.  At this time, whenever a student chooses to go from in person to virtual for the day , they must contact the Attendance office at RHS.Attendance@vernonct.org and their teachers?

Teacher Communication

The best way to contact teachers is through their vernonct.org email which is first name.last name@vernonct.org. (ex: jason.magao@vernonct.org) There have been issues with Google Classroom and messaging through that avenue. Please email teachers with questions and concerns.

Thank you and have an outstanding weekend,

Mr. Magao

An Important message from Pupil Services

August 28, 2020:

Hello Rockville Students & Parents,

During the last few weeks many families have let us know what type of learning model your student will be engaged in  - virtual versus the hybrid model.  On Monday we will have two types of learning going on in person and virtual synchronous learning.

How things will differ from the Spring of 2020

  1. All students are required to take part in every class, attendance will be taken both in-person and virtually at regularly scheduled times. (see below for schedule times).
  2. 70% is passing for every class.
  3. Wednesday’s are ½ Day’s in the morning and all students are required to participate virtually.
  4. Masks must be worn unless you are directed by a staff member otherwise (mask-breaks).
  5. Lanes must be followed in the hallways as they are now divided and arrows are on the floors.
  6. Water fountains will be disabled but water filling stations will work. Water bottles are encouraged.
  7. Teachers will be requiring students to attend video conferences this year.
  8. We will survey parents, staff and students to continuously develop this plan as it will continue to be fluid.
  9. We will support students while we work through any and all issues this week including logging into google classroom, zoom, etc.

 Hybrid (last name) A-L

  • Rockville High School opens at 7 am but during this time it would be helpful if students who are driven to school or walk came closer to 7:15.  Due to this being the first week of school, we have to go over rules and protocols, therefore all students will be directed to the front entrance (Monday and Thursday),  to receive materials.  Remember that student drop off is on the side of the school and buses drop off in the front.  Monday is an A day you will have blocks 1- 4. Please bring a charged chrome book, binder and writing materials (pens, pencils). Please bring any materials you have from the Spring that belong to RHS.

Hybrid (last name) M-Z and ALL VIRTUAL LEARNERS

  • Blocks 1-4 will be running at their normal times and the expectation is that you will sign into your teachers zoom and/or other online platform that they have indicated via email/Google Classroom.
    • Block 1 - 7:30 - 8:54
    • Block 2  - 9:00 - 10:29
    • Block 3  - 10:35 - 12:30 (there is lunch built in here and your teacher will let you know when your lunch is for that block)
    • Block 4  - 12:36 - 2:00
  • Rock Block - if you have a rock block your teacher will be in contact with you to let you know how you will jointly navigate this resource.  Rock Block teachers are here to help you and to advocate for educational opportunities that you need.

  IMPORTANT RESOURCES

As we all navigate this learning together there are resources along the way to help  you.  Please peruse our Distance Learning Link to learn more about RHS.

Can’t wait to see everyone next week and have a great weekend!
