Visiting Our Schools

Ensuring a safe and secure environment for students to learn and staff to work is a top priority for the Vernon Public School District. We encourage you to visit our schools and take an active role in the education of our children.

All visitors to Vernon Public Schools are required to make an appointment at least 24-hours in advance of your visit with your schools main office. This will ensure that the person you are visiting is available and the learning process is not disrupted. When arriving on school property, we ask that you please park in a legal parking space and do not park in reserved parking spaces or fire lanes.

All visitors will be required to provide a government issued photo identification to be checked into our building. All of our schools utilize an electronic visitor management system that allows our staff to quickly and efficiently check you in and provide you with a temporary visitors pass. As part of the check in process, all visitors will be checked against the National Sexual Offender registry. In the event that a sexual offender attempts to enter one of our schools, our office staff will receive a discreet alert and have been trained to handle the situation in a professional and non-confrontational manner. Vernon Board of Education policy prohibits sexual offenders from being on school property during school hours or any school related function.

If you are a parent we encourage you to take part in your child educational process and have procedures in place to ensure you are able to visit your child’s school to attend meetings and events. If you are a registered sexual offender, please contact the Superintendent’s office prior to visiting any school at (860) 870-6000.

Why am I required to make an appointment to visit my child’s school 24 hours in advance?

Vernon Board of Education policy requires that appointments during school hours be made in advance by all visitors to minimize disruption of administration, teaching and staff duties. To make an appointment, please contact your schools main office.

Why do you require a valid, government issued photo ID for me to visit my child’s school?

The safety and security of our students and staff is of the utmost importance. We require a valid, government issued, photo identification from all visitors so we can positively verify the identity of everyone in our facilities. If you do not have photo identification, you may make an appointment with our Logistics and Safety Supervisor to provide alternative documentation to verify your identity.

Do I need to bring my ID with me every time I visit a school?

Yes, you will need to bring your valid, government issued, photo identification with you anytime you visit our schools, including when picking up your child.

What happens when you scan my government issued photo ID?

By scanning your ID card, the system extracts your name and date of birth and enters it into our visitor management system and compares it to the national sexual offender database. If no matches are found, a visitor badge will be printed and you will be permitted to enter the school.

If a positive match occurs indicating that a visitor is a registered sexual offender, what will happen?

We encourage parents to be part of their child’s educational process and have put policies in place to ensure that you are able to attend meetings and events. You are required to meet with the Superintendent in advance of your visit to your child’s schools so we may review the policies and procedures with you.

What information is stored by your system?

Your name, date of birth, and photo will be stored in our secure, on-line, visitor management system as well as the date and time of your visit.
